MYM #005: Embracing Discomfort - Unlocking Your Potential

Jul 17, 2023

In this week's newsletter, we'll explore the transformative power of embracing discomfort.

By pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zones, practicing discipline, and taking action, we can unlock new levels of personal and professional growth.

To Quote the great David Goggins “Get Comfortable being Uncomfortable”

In this issue, we'll discuss strategies and mindset shifts that will empower you to embrace discomfort.

By doing these things: you'll develop resilience, expand your horizons, and reach new heights of personal and professional achievement. Embracing discomfort is the catalyst for personal growth and success.

Many people avoid discomfort and seek the safety of their comfort zones, which limits their potential for growth and achievement. Fear of failure, complacency, and resistance to change often hold individuals back from embracing discomfort.

By understanding these common barriers, we can overcome them and unlock our true potential.

Key Points:

  1. Do the Hard Things
  2. Practicing Discipline
  3. Just Start

Do the Hard Things: Such a simple phrase, yet in our opinion means so much. This is essential because it pushes us outside of our comfort zones. And the best part? It doesn’t matter what area that is in!

It can be something that is physical, mental, emotional, or financial. Whatever is something you constantly avoid out of fear, push yourself to do things that challenge yourself and help you grow.

Regarding your finances, we know things happen. Markets tank, emergencies pop up, the budget gets tight. It’s important to stay focused on your financial plan, and recommit everyday to yourself in knowing you have a long-term plan.

Continue taking those small steps, even when it feels like you are sacrificing and aren’t making any progress, because those micro actions compound!

Practice Discipline: Practicing discipline is important because it helps us stay focused on our goals, maintain consistency in our actions, and overcome obstacles.

It enables us to make intentional choices, develop healthy habits, and persevere through challenges. By cultivating discipline, we increase our chances of achieving long-term success and personal fulfillment.

Discipline is imperative to our long term financial success. Whether that means sticking to your budget, your dollar cost-average schedule, investment strategy, or staying on track with your goals.

“Discipline is consistently doing the things you hate doing as if you love them!” - Mike Tyson. Below is a great thread outlining some ways to build discipline in your life.

Just Start: Just starting is important because it overcomes inertia and gets us moving towards our goals.

Taking that initial step, even if it feels small or imperfect, sets us on a path of progress and opens doors to new possibilities.

The mental barrier we have because of fear uncertainty & self-doubt is the biggest thing we have holding us back! Once we make that first step - we have momentum & can keep the ball moving forward.

When it comes to saving & investing - it is CRITICAL to JUST START. Here’s a great chart outlining the importance of starting & investing early!

Actionable Tip:

Identify one area in your life where you have been avoiding discomfort and commit to taking action today.

Set a challenging goal, create a plan, and break it down into small actionable steps. Embrace the discomfort that comes with pursuing this goal, knowing that growth and success lie on the other side!
